The A to Z Challenge is daily meme posting every day (except Sundays) in April. Check out the list of 1500+ participants below and follow along for 26 days (and 26 letters) of fun. The 2-letter code after each blog name may help narrow your choices - (BO) is Books, (WR) is Writing, (PH) is Photography . . . and, if you're concerned about those NSFW pages, (AC) is Adult Content.
For my theme, I'm going with a little author/title alliteration.
Today's challenge post is brought to you by the letter B, as in Clive Barker, author of The Books of Blood. I vividly remember seeing those slender volumes sitting on the shelf at Coles. I had no idea who this Barker guy was, but those grotesquely illustrated covers screamed at me to take a look, and the quote from Stephen King about Barker being the future of horror sealed the deal. I mean, really, what more could I ask for?
The stories inside were as weird as they were wonderful, pushing the extremes of pain and pleasure, and full of darkly sexual concepts that I didn't fully understand . . . but so desperately wanted to. They were like the best episodes of the Twilight Zone, crossed with the best short stories of Stephen King, crossed with the gore-filled slasher flicks we snuck into the theatre to see. It took me years to get the fourth volume with the original Barker illustrated cover, but the complete set still occupies a place of honour on my shelves today.
