Feature & Follow Friday

Posted on 18:55 by Unknown

Feature & Follow Friday is a blog hop that is designed to provide some much-appreciated exposure to the bloggers participating, and to expand their following. Hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read, each of whom feature a chosen blog for the week, it's an interesting way to get to know one another.

Question of the Week: What is the BIGGEST word you've seen used in a book lately - that made you stop and look it up? Might as well leave the definition & book too.

To be honest, I can't remember the last time I had to reach for a dictionary. I think, after all these years, I've come across just about every word or term I'm likely to encounter in a book. Neal Stephenson's Anathem, however, was a difficult book, with its made-up mish-mash of scientific, religious, and Latin terms. It didn't leave me reaching for a dictionary, but definitely kept me flipping back to the glossary for words like:

amanuensis (\uh-man-yoo-EN-sis\), plural amanuenses, is a person employed to write or type what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another, and also refers to a person who signs a document on behalf of another under their authority. The term derives from a Latin expression made up of a suffix, -ensis, "belonging to", and prefix, manu-, "hand".

Parajunkee also hosts a Social Hop for Facebook and Twitter, which I regularly take part in. So, if you're one of those people who aren't on Blogger, or who just don't like Google Friend Connect, it's a great way to keep in touch and follow one another.

18 and Over Book Blogger Follow is a weekly feature that begins on Fridays and runs through the weekend hosted by Crystal from Reading Between the Wines. This one is aimed primarily at bloggers and books for the 18 and over crowd.

Question of the Week:
Pick up your current book, turn to a random page, and jot down the first few sentences that pop out at you. Make sure to share the author & title of the book with everyone!

This comes from Bone Wires by Michael Shean:

He wondered if she’d been forced to do it that way and got used to it or if she’d been one of those hypersexualized girls who grew up early and decided to wield themselves like weapons at the public. Maybe it was survival, maybe it was mental illness, who the f*ck knew. He wasn’t Vice and he wasn’t a saint, so it’s not like he could help her. He stared at the park from across the street once more; she had vanished as quickly as she had appeared, like some kind of bizarre nymph that might have sprung from one of the dying trees.

Don't forget to check out my interviews with Lee Battersby and Adam Christopher for a chance to win paperback ARC copies of The Corpse Rat King and Seven Wonders.

Question of the Week: What is the best cover of a book that you've read and loved?

Last week I picked Clive Barker's US editions of the Books of Blood as some of the worst covers, so it's time to give some love to the UK covers that first made me a fan. Just to balance things out, I'll include the simple beauty of his original Imajica cover as well (although the re-release cover isn't bad).

Question of the Week:
How do you go about choosing what you read next? Do you have a schedule you follow, or do you read whatever makes you happy at the moment?

I am absolutely a mood reader, picking up whatever happens to appeal to my whims of the moment. I will schedule reads where I have a hard deadline (i.e. a book tour), but otherwise I go with whatever interests me.

SQT and Jim over at Fantasy & SciFi Lovin' News & Reviews always inspire me (it's rare that I disagree with any of their picks or their reviews), along with Pat from Pat's Fantasy Hotlist (it amazes me just how plugged in he is to genre news and developments) and Joe over at Glorious Trash (just because it's nice to see somebody share my eccentric love for the pulp past).

Question of the Week: Do your reading habits change based on your mood? Do you read a certain genre if you are feeling depressed or happy?

I wouldn't say that particular moods drive my reading habits into a particular genre, but they do tend to sway me between genres. When I'm a bad mood, whatever I'm reading tends to lose its appeal and I need to do a complete genre switch (i.e from fantasy to techno-thriller, or sci-fi fantasy) to to get back on track, before returning to that book sometime later.

Hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read, each of whom feature a chosen blog for the week, it's an interesting way to get to know one another.

Question of the Week: Christmas in July! Someone gives you a gift card for two books (whatever that costs). What two books will you buy?

So, two books, and cost isn't a factor? I'd have to go with the Dark Tower Omnibus (an oversized hardcover collecting the first five volumes of Marvel's Dark Tower series plus the Dark Tower Companion) and one of the Subterranean Press Brian Lumley editions - either the Fly-By-Nights or Necroscope: The Plague Bearer .

Parajunkee also hosts a Social Hop for Facebook and Twitter, which I regularly take part in. So, if you're one of those people who aren't on Blogger, or who just don't like Google Friend Connect, it's a great way to keep in touch and follow one another.

Question of the Week: This week is a throwback to a previous question - Is there a particular author you wish got more recognition? Pick one author & tell us why we should read their work.

On the horror side, I'd have to go with Brian Lumley - yes, he's won a number of awards, and yes, he's reasonably well-known to horror aficionados, but he lacks the kind of mainstream acceptance that books like his Necroscope saga (and Vampire World offshoot) deserve. Seriously, this man knows how to do vampires right - by which I mean supernaturally evil and preternaturally vicious.

On the fantasy side, I'd go with David B Coe - again, he's reasonably well-known to hardcore fantasy fans, but he doesn't get the widespread recognition that traditional fantasy epics like The Lon Tobyn Chronicles and The Winds of the Forelands deserve.

Hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read, each of whom feature a chosen blog for the week, it's an interesting way to get to know one another.

Question of the Week: What drove you to start book blogging in the first place?

I'll be perfectly honest - I got into blogging because I wanted access to free books before they hit the store shelves. I've always been an avid reader, loyal to my favourite authors, so the idea of being able to get a sneak-peek, to read something before anybody else, really excited me. Now that I've been blogging for a year, what I enjoy most is interacting with authors, and getting to know them off the page . . . but I still get excited when I see those ARCs on my doorstep. :)

Question of the Week: Quotes That Make You Swoon - What are some of the most swoon-worthy quotes you've experienced in a book?

I'm not sure what qualifies as swoon-worthy (I'm really not one to read anything that involves swooning), so I'm just going to go with 2 quotes from my latest read struck me as quirky:

"Discovered less than four hundred years ago by the famous Tallian adventurer “Literal” Edmund Bejeevers, the Dog Crap Archipelago lay like a giant turd across the passage between Borgho City and the Faraway isles. Early explorers found nothing there to recommend the place to anybody, and indeed, early maps show a simple ovoid outline with the words “Don’t Bother” written inside."

"The wall that surrounds Scorby City is over twenty feet thick, although nobody has tried to invade in over three hundred years. It isn’t worth the effort. Any potential invader would be so quickly and effectively wrapped in red tape that signing the necessary permission forms just to rape and pillage – and those forms actually exist – would take up most of a season."

Hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read, each of whom feature a chosen blog for the week, it's an interesting way to get to know one another.

Question of the Week: If you could “unread” a book, which one would it be? Is it because you want to start over and experience it again for the first time? Or because it was THAT bad?

I'd love to forget The Last Battle. I was reasonably fond of the Chronicles of Naria, right up through The Silver Chair. That WTF ending, though, so thick with Lewis' religious propaganda that you could cut it with a sword . . . it's the only time I've ever thrown a book in the trash.

On the positive side, I'd be curious to forget Pet Semetary and give it a fresh read, not from the perspective of a young boy graduating from YA fiction, but as a father with a child not much younger than Gage. I suspect it's impact would be far different now than it was then.

Parajunkee also hosts a Social Hop for Facebook and Twitter, which I regularly take part in. So, if you're one of those people who aren't on Blogger, or who just don't like Google Friend Connect, it's a great way to keep in touch and follow one another.

Question of the Week: Have you ever contacted an author you admired? How did that experience go? If not, which author would you love to have a chat with?

I've had some interesting email conversations with authors I've certainly come to admire, but I can't say I've ever had the chance to connect with any of my old, long-time favourites. If I had the chance to sit down and chat, I'd be looking to invite the likes of authors who are just as interesting for their past or side careers as for their writing - Clive Barker, Douglas Preston, and Clive Cussler.

Question of the Week: Happy Father's Day! Who is your favorite dad character in a book and why?

Since we're talking books I'll take a pass at the obvious - Darth Vader - and go with the dad who not only sticks best in my mind, but who always reminds me of my dad. I'm going with Calvin's dad from Calvin and Hobbes.

No question - I have to go with my signed hardcopy edition of The Essential Clive Barker.

Question of the Week: If you could use existing characters from some of your favourite books to create a new story, who would be in it?

I'd bring together a few villainous hordes, just to mix 'em up and see what happens. Invited to the party would be Brian Lumley's Wamphyri, Clive Barker's Cenobites, Robert Jordan's Forsaken, and Terry Goodkind's Mord-sith (before Richard went and redeemed them).

Question of the Week: You are a matchmaker — your goal, hook up two characters from two of your favorite books. Who would it be? How do you think it would go?

Yeah, I've got no clue on this one - I'm not now and have never been a matchmaker, so I can't even think of where to begin. I'd probably end up forcing a paring that is either uproariously funny, or completely inappropriate. :)

Question of the Week: Issue Books: Which books have you found to be very rewarding when it comes to tackling tougher issues?

Wow, rough week for questions! I generally don't like "issue" books and tend to steer clear as soon as I realise that's where a book is headed. I read to be entertained, to be amazed, and to be amused - if I want to be preached at or hit over the head with a message, I'll watch a morning talk show. Actually, I doubt I'd ever watch one, but you get the idea. LOL

Question of the Week: Activity! Dream cast your current read.

I just finished reading Strindberg's Star, and since it reminded me so much of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,  I couldn't help but see a mix of two movie adaptions, with Daniel Craig in the lead role (from the American remake) and Noomi Rapace in the supporting role (from the original).

Show Me Your Cover - What are some of the worst book covers, but hold some of the best stories inside? Don't be embarrassed, show us your cover!

I can't think of any recent reads that had absolutely horrible covers, but I've always thought Dean Koontz could definitely benefit from a bit more thought and attention in creating shelf appeal:

I would tell Clive Barker that he taught me books can be both magical and macabre, both fantastic and fearsome, and that there are no taboos that cannot be crossed, if crossed well and with passion.

Question of the Week: Literary Vacations - If you could take a trip this summer to any place within a fictional book, where would you go? Tell us about your summer dream vacation!

I'd go somewhere impossible, somewhere that can only exist within the imagination of the author and the reader . . . somewhere heavily forested, with dragons and unicorns, where magic works, and where there are adventures to be found. I'm thinking of Krynn (from the Dragonlance Chronicles), Armethalieh (the Obsidian Trilogy), or Midkemia (the Riftwar Saga).

Question of the Week: Have you had a character that disappointed you? One that you fell in love with and then “broke up” with later on in either the series or a stand-alone book? Tell us about him or her.

I'd have to go with Richard Rahl, of Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth saga. For about three (maybe four) books, he was one of the strongest heroes in fantasy . . . and then he (or, more accurately, Goodkind) lost his innocence, lost his sense of purposed, turned all philosophical, and lost the qualities that made him the hero who originally won me over. By the time The Omen Machine rolled around, he was just plain boring.

Question of the Week: Reading Blues: We all get them from time to time. What helps you overcome those reading slumps when nothing seems to grab your attention?

Reading blues are why I always have 3 or 4 books on the go at a time. When the blues hit in one genre, and I just can't seem to settle into a read, I hop genres and read something completely different. When the blues hit hard, and nothing seems to hold my interest, I just lose myself in my writing.

Question of the Week: Fight! Fight! If you could have two fictional characters battle it out (preferably from books), who would they be and who do you think would win?

Give me a battle of the underdogs - sickly Elric of Melniboné (Michael Moorcock), leprous Thomas Covenant (Stephen Donaldson), and sickly Raistlin Majere (Weis & Hickman). Depending on who has the strongest grasp on their sanity that day, and whether they're prepared to wield their magical talismans (sword, ring, or staff), it's anybody's battle . . . but I'd have to give Raistlin the edge for his experience with treachery.
