Call for Submissions - Midian Unmade: Tales of Clive Barker's Nightbreed

Posted on 17:15 by Unknown

Stoker Award-winning anthologist Del Howison (Dark Delicacies 1-3, The Book of Lists: Horror) and internationally bestselling urban fantasy author Joseph Nassise (Eyes To See, By the Blood of Heroes) have joined forces with horror Grand Master Clive Barker to bring you back to the city of Midian and the creatures of the darkness known as the Nightbreed!

Tor Books will be publishing MIDIAN UNMADE: TALES OF CLIVE BARKER’S NIGHTBREED in simultaneous hardcover and trade paperback editions in the fall of 2014 and we’re looking for original horror and dark fantasy stories that fit the guidelines below.

MIDIAN UNMADE: TALES OF CLIVE BARKER’S NIGHTBREED

We’ve all felt it at one time or another – that sense of unbelonging, of being isolated, possibly even shunned because of our differences; not for anything that we’ve done but for simply being who we are.  We’ve all felt it – in childhood and adolescence, certainly, but even as adults as well, when the winds of change blow through our lives and we discover that those things we thought immutable are, in reality, anything but.

When this happens we all become like changeling children, at odds with those around us as well as with ourselves, looking to distant horizons for fresh comprehension of our purpose, sometimes even of our very nature.

The fiction of the fantastic literally overflows with metaphors for times like these, though none more so than the Nightbreed, those freaks and grotesques and shapeshifters extraordinaire that inhabit the hidden necropolis of Midian and make it their own in the pages of Clive Barker’s CABAL.   The Nightbreed are a colony of survivors, the last remnants of the once great tribes of the moon, and in their alienation they find a sense of togetherness, of belonging that often seems more human than those who bear that name.

Until the coming of Boone, that is, and the destruction of their hidden sanctuary, when they become outcasts once again.

MIDIAN UNMADE: TALES OF CLIVE BARKER’S NIGHTBREED picks up where CABAL left off, chronicling the lives of the ‘Breed as they disperse into the world after the fall of Midian.  We’re looking for stories of struggle and despair, of hope and sanctification, as the former inhabitants of Midian try to adapt to the world from which they retreated years before.  A world that does not want them.  A world that will hound them, hunt them, simply for the crime of being different.

Writers have Clive’s permission to use the existing members of the Breed that appear in the novella Cabal, in the film Nightbreed, and in the companion volume, The Nightbreed Chronicles, published by Titan Books.  Writers also have the option of creating their own unique and fantastical creatures that fit the Nightbreed mold.

We’re seeking original horror and dark fantasy stories.  We pay five cents per word up to 5,000 words, with 30% paid on acceptance and the remainder to be paid after the complete manuscript has been accepted by the publisher. (Please note that this is work for hire project as Clive owns the world in which the project is set. Writers may use their stories in this anthology and have permission to use them in collections of their own works or in annual best-of anthologies, but they may not write and submit additional stories featuring the characters they create for this project to publishing projects elsewhere.)

Story submissions should be sent to either Joe Nassise (jnassise@gmail.com) or Del Howison (del@darkdel.com), using the subject line MIDIAN STORY ENCLOSED.  If the subject line is not used, we cannot guarantee receipt of the story, as we will both be using email filters to isolate all Midian submissions from our regular mail.  Stories should be submitted before September 30th, 2013.

Questions can be directed to either of the email addresses above.

We look forward to hearing from you!

B is for Books of Blood (A to Z Challenge)

Posted on 21:02 by Unknown

The A to Z Challenge is daily meme posting every day (except Sundays) in April. Check out the list of 1500+ participants below and follow along for 26 days (and 26 letters) of fun. The 2-letter code after each blog name may help narrow your choices - (BO) is Books, (WR) is Writing, (PH) is Photography . . . and, if you're concerned about those NSFW pages, (AC) is Adult Content.

For my theme, I'm going with a little author/title alliteration.

Today's challenge post is brought to you by the letter B, as in Clive Barker, author of The Books of Blood. I vividly remember seeing those slender volumes sitting on the shelf at Coles. I had no idea who this Barker guy was, but those grotesquely illustrated covers screamed at me to take a look, and the quote from Stephen King about Barker being the future of horror sealed the deal. I mean, really, what more could I ask for?

The stories inside were as weird as they were wonderful, pushing the extremes of pain and pleasure, and full of darkly sexual concepts that I didn't fully understand . . . but so desperately wanted to. They were like the best episodes of the Twilight Zone, crossed with the best short stories of Stephen King, crossed with the gore-filled slasher flicks we snuck into the theatre to see. It took me years to get the fourth volume with the original Barker illustrated cover, but the complete set still occupies a place of honour on my shelves today.

Some Highlights of Clive Barker's Facebook Q&A

Posted on 09:30 by Unknown
For those of you who missed it, Clive Barker did a live Q&A on his official Facebook page this weekend. If I learned one thing from the experience, it's to follow along on a full version of Facebook - his answers got completely lost within my Blackberry App, but I was able to review them at my leisure over breakfast this morning.

Here are a few of the juiciest tidbits regarding the future that he had to share:

Have you or will you write a sequel to EVERVILLE?

Yes, there will be a third book of the art.

Will there be more to Galilee's story? I was particularly touched by that novel. Love all your work!!!

Yes, there is a second Galilee novel which will be the great battle between the families. As an aside, I have seldom talked about Galilee, mainly because people haven't asked about it. But it's a book I love very much, and is rooted in a lot of research in the Carolinas, at civil war sites and of course on the island of Kauai where the Geary women have their vacation love nest, in which only one man ever visits. That man of course is Galilee.

Do you have a rough estimation for when Abarat IV will be finished?

Yes I have an estimation but I am superstitious about saying things like that for fear of calling down the wrath of the writing gods who punish the confident with a slap on the face and a dry pen.

"Scarlet Gospels" - what stage is it on? Mark is supposed to be working on it - is he doing it?

The Scarlet gospels is half way done, but contains a lot of very dark and controversial material which will take much more work before its ready for publication. I believe it will be quite an interesting subject for debate in the vatican when its published.

"Black Is the Devil's Rainbow", are the stories written? What halts the book?

Black is the devils rainbow is not only a short stories but also poems. Most of the material is written, the problem is the order in which the order in which my publishes want to release books. And they feel strongly that I should deliver every par t of the Abarat quartet before we move on to another project.

Clive I heard that a studio bought the movie rights to an Abarat movie. Is there any progress on the movie?

I am very optimistic that we will have news about an Abrat Movie at some point in the future. But my Irish italian ancestry makes me a superstitious sun of a bitch, and I sdon't want to spoil our chances make something com to frution by getting to cocky or certain about any future posibitlies. Let me say this; if there is any project of mine which seems to holler " film me! film me!" It would be the Abarat books. There as you all probably know FIVE in total. The scale of the story expands exponentially as we move towards the cosmic climax of those five books. It's going to be an incredible challenge for the filmmakers who take on the project to create the mystical visions and transfigurations that the whole journey of the abrat books is taking us towards.

Will there be a book made with you pictures?

There are plans for large scale books that will contain both my paintings and photography. I want them to be as beautifully printed and as comprehensively curated as possible. So, they may be a little while to come to completion. Russell Chrrington who is the grand master curator of my paintings, and (one of the nicest mans in the world!) has been at work for a while on creating the definitive guide to the development of my work as an artist, which for many people has come as a surprise. I think most readers had no knowledge of my life as painter, nor had I sought any attention or had intended to draw attention to that area of my work. its only when i realized that people really liked it and that I could, and that seeing my paintings gave pleasure to people that I started to take care of drawings that I made. And incited a few people that I trusted completely like Russell and Phil and Sarah stokes, and to the man sitting by my side Alex, to guide me and advise me about how to bring the images that I make to people all over the world.

He also shared some great thoughts regarding his inspiration and his writing process so, if you're so inclined, pop on over and check out the Q&As posted to his wall.

Say all you want about Barker's erratic work ethic (there are several long-gestating works-in-progress he's teased that I would kill to read), but this is a cool concept. As the site says, only *CliveBarker’s prologue has been revealed. Deviant artists, writers and filmmakers are now called upon to conjure the rest of this story to life.
